Abuse can be thought of as a form of violence as one person tries to control another.   Abuse can affect anyone from any walk of life-- men, women, children, elderly adults and can be experienced, physically, emotionally, sexually, or verbally.  If you or anyone you know is experiencing abuse, it is important to seek immediate assistance froma professional. Although symptoms of abuse vary depending on the situation, common signs of abuse include: feelings of humiliation,  helplessness, guilt, depression, and fear, experiencing self-blame, feeling isolated, and neglecting oneself.

Abuse can affect a person physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually.  Intellectually a person may feel they need to become extra alert or hypervigilant, which can lead to being jumpy and/or experiencing insomnia in the physical quadrant.  Emotionally, a person may feel ashamed and choose to disconnect from others, leading to feelings of isolation.
